Morgagni's classic work was first translated into English by the London physician, Benjamin Alexander (fl. 1740) in 1769. This second translation was undertaken by William Cooke (1785-1873), a London surgeon. In the Preface Cooke explains that "a deep conviction of the importance of the subject induced me to undertake an abridgment of Morgagni's voluminous work" (pp. ii-iii). Cooke found Alexander's translation of great value in his work and also added many of his own notes.
