Thomas Paynell (fl. 1528-1567) first translated the Regimen sanitatis Salernitanum into English in the early 1530s. In his translation, Paynell included the Latin verses attributed to Joannes de Mediolano (fl. 1100) or John of Milan. Many authorities believe that John wrote the poem when he was head of the medical school at Salerno. The commentary Paynell translated is purported to be that of Arnaldus de Villanova.
