This first French edition of Cheyne's popular book was translated by the Abbé de la Chapelle (1710-1792). Chapelle was a French mathematician who eventually became royal censor and was also a fellow of the Royal Society. On the verso of the half-title page of Volume II, Chapelle has inscribed the book to Gilles Bertrand Pibrae (1693-1771), director of the Académie Royale de Chirurgie de Paris.
