The present work is often considered to be the best of Cheyne's books because it summarizes his medical philosophy and doctrines. The book achieved immediate popularity and four editions were issued in English in the first year of publication; the book was soon translated into French, Italian, and Latin. Cheyne gave many useful and practical suggestions on healthful living during a time when such advice was urgently needed.
