New theories always have their critics and disclaimers and such was the case soon after Saint-Yves' Traité des maladies des yeux (see No. 732) was published. In the May, 1722 issue of the Mercure de France, there appeared a letter signed by a M. Mauchart which strongly criticized Saint-Yves for his opinion that the cataract was within the lens of the eye. In this short work, his only printed response to Mauchart, Saint-Yves objectively refutes Mauchart's accusations and adds some supplementary material to his Traité des maladies des yeux. Burchard David Mauchart (1696-1751) had studied in Paris for two years just prior to the publication of Saint-Yves book and had also received instruction from the eminent English ophthalmologist, Thomas Woolhouse (1650?-1734), in surgery of the eye. He returned to Tübingen in 1722 and in 1726 was appointed to its chair of anatomy and surgery.
