Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 729

ANTONIO MARIA VALSALVA (1666-1723) De aure humana tractatus. Apud Gisbertum Langerak & Johannem Hasebroek 1735 [12] 143 [1] pp., 10 fold. plates. 21.2 cm.

Valsalva, student of Malpighi (see No. 569 ff.) and teacher of Morgagni (see No. 789 ff.), is best remembered for his work upon the ear. This remarkable book, which became a standard on the subject for over a century, contains his anatomical, physiological, and pathological observations of the organ. In it he described and depicted even the smallest muscles and nerves of the ear, subdividing the ear into its internal, middle, and external parts, and he showed an original method of inflating the middle ear (Valsalva's maneuver) which is still practiced today.
