JOHANN CONRAD BARCHUSEN (1666-1723) De medicinae origine et progressu dissertationes. Apud Gysbertum Paddenburg et Guilielmum Croon 1723 [16] 679 pp. 20.5 cm.

Barchusen, German chemist and physician, taught at Utrecht for many years. He received his medical degree while at Utrecht and discovered succinic acid during the course of his chemical studies and experiments. Although his major publications were in the field of chemistry and pharmacology, the present work resulted from his interest in history. It was first published in Amsterdam in 1710, and this is a revised and expanded edition. In a series of twenty-six essays he writes about the doctrines of Hippocrates, Paracelsus, Galen, and Celsus, ancient medicine, anatomy, magic and astrology, gymnastics, and important medical personages such as Fludd, Willis, Stahl, Le Boë, Severinus, and Helmont.
