ASCANIO MARIA BAZZICALUVE (ca. 1663-ca. 1731.) Novum systema medico-mechanicum, et nova tumorum methodus :quorum nomine comprehenduntur inflammationes omnes, intrinsecùs, & extrinsecùs advenientes, per generales propositiones, cum motus legibus, & mechanicis necessitatibus, exarata, pro systemate inservientes Apud Albertum Pazzonum & Paulum Montium 1701 [16], 144 pp., [4] leaves of plates : ill. (engravings) 23 cm. (8vo)
First and Only Edition and very rare, a treatise in which the origin of tumors is explained through the use of mechanical and mathematical principles. A student of Borelli and an ardent proponent of his iatromchanical theories, the author (c.1663-c.1731) made all illness a function of the increase or decrease of fermentation. The work presents an elaborate theory of the origin of tumors, based on a mechanical, hydrodynamic understanding of the motion of the blood through the veins and arteries. Numerous experiments designed to prove the conical form of the arteries are described.
