GEORG PHILIPP NENTER (d. 1721) Fundamenta medicinae theoretico-practica. Sumptibus Joannis Reinholdi Dulsseckeri 1718 Vol. I: [32] 232 [2] 233-443 pp.; Vol. II: [2] 408 pp. 21.1 cm.
Nenter, born in Strasbourg, studied medicine there and became professor of medicine at the university in 1707. The present rigidly organized text deals with a variety of medical and surgical subjects but it never exerted a great influence on the medical thought and practice of the time. Nenter was a follower of Stahl (see No. 701) who championed the animistic school of thought. Stahl's "animism," the complete dependence of the animal body on the soul for its organic function, was not a theory with lasting popularity. Stahl and his adherents were lagging behind current scientific thought even in the early eighteenth century.
