Mauriceau's popular Traité des maladies des femmes grosses, et de celles qui sont accouchées (see No. 604) went through many editions and was translated into English, German, Dutch, and Italian. It was first translated into English by Hugh Chamberlen (ca. 1630-ca. 1720) in 1673 and continued through nine editions until 1758. The Chamberlen family developed a practical obstetrical forceps in the late 1640s and kept its design secret for several generations while profiting greatly from its use in their practice.
