Of unknown authorship, this early English translation of the Aphorisms is among the first to have been published separately during the seventeenth century. The first English versions of the Aphorisms appeared collectively with other works during the sixteenth century. In addition to the seven sections of the Aphorisms, the book includes a short biography of Hippocrates taken from Soranus, the Hippocratic oath, and a table listing aphorisms that pertain to particular diseases. Following each aphorism is a very brief remark; the title page indicates that these were taken from the notes of Galen (see No. 36 ff.), Johan van Heurne (1543-1601), and Fuchs (see No. 241 ff.). The first aphorism "Vita brevis, ars vero longa" is here rendered "life is short, the art is long, occasion suddain, experience dangerous, judgement difficult" (p. 1). The portrait usually present as leaf A1 is lacking in this copy.
