For more information on this author or work, see number: 569
It was Malpighi's policy not to allow any of his writings dealing with the practice of medicine to be published under his name unless he judged that they were useful contributions to the literature. As a result, few of his teachings on practical medicine were published and he left a large number of unpublished consilia at his death. Girolamo Gaspari (fl. 1680) of Verona was encouraged to compile and edit the present work by Vallisnieri (see No. 706) who possessed a large number of the consilia. Vallisnieri was encouraged by Gaspari's great interest in Malpighi as a practitioner and also wanted to quiet those who questioned Malpighi's ability as a practicing physician. However, because of Gaspari's ineptitude and inexperience, his edition had many faults and met with immediate criticism. Nevertheless, this was the first time a large number of Malpighi's medical consilia had been assembled for publication.
