ANTHONY EVERAERTS (1628-1679) Novus et genuinus hominis brutique animalis exortus. Ex officinâ Francisci Kroock ... 1661 First edition. [36], 288 p. 13 cm.

First edition of this embryological treatise, which discusses at length Harvey’s De generatione animalium (1651). Everaerts studied under Deusing and was one of the founders of the medical college at Middleburg. On the basis of his observations of the rabbit foetus, he adhered to the doctrine of preformation of the embryo. He believed that the embryo was nourished through its mouth directly by the amniotic fluid alone, and that the “uterine milk” was supplied by the lymphatic system.
