Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 556

CARLO CESI (1626-1686) Cognitione de muscoli del corpo humano per il disegno. Franco Collignon 1679 18 ll., (incl. 16 plates). 41.2 cm.

Cesi was an Italian painter and etcher of copperplates who lived in Rome where he maintained his own painting academy. He was a pupil of Pietro da Cortona (see No. 470), and his work is of lesser quality than that of his teacher. Neither the artistic quality nor the anatomical accuracy of this book are of special note. The book contains two plates depicting skeletons and fourteen muscle plates of which five are of full male figures. The text is scanty and is chiefly used to describe the plates.
