For more information on this author or work, see number: 501

Physician, physiologist, chemist, and teacher, Sylvius had a significant influence on the development of medicine, physiology, and chemistry. Students from throughout Europe came to Leiden to attend his lectures and he inspired several brilliant students--Jan Swammerdam (see No. 602), Nicholaus Steno (see No. 608), and Reinier de Graaf (see Nos. 636 ff.)--to major achievements in anatomy and physiology. Compiled only seven years after his death, the Opera contains his numerous writings as well as transcripts of several important lectures. Also included in the volume is the funeral oration delivered by Lucas Schacht (1624-1689), professor of medicine at Leiden. The oration is an important contemporary biographical source on Sylvius.
