HENRICUS REGIUS (1598-1679) Fundamenta physices. Apud Ludovicum Elzevirium 1646 [16] 306 pp., illus., diagrs. 10.9 cm.
Regius was professor of botany, theoretical medicine, and anatomy at Utrecht and a pupil, friend, and ardent follower of Descartes. This book on physical philosophy created something of a sensation when it appeared because the author departed from his adherence to Cartesian doctrine and, as a result, was denounced by Descartes. The book contains numerous scientific and anatomical woodcuts, with those of the magnet being of special interest. The book is very rare and is not found in the major medical bibliographies.
