The first part of this work is a collection of engraved full-page portraits and short biographical sketches of famous men of science, medicine, and religion. Among the nearly sixty portraits are those of Arnoldus de Villanova, Ulisse Aldrovandi, Jean Fernel, Girolamo Fracastoro, Giovanni Argenterio, Jean Riolan, Giovanni Battista della Porta, and Andreas Vesalius. The second part is an interesting study of memory and the nature of genius based in part on the lives of the men whose portraits appear in the first section of the book.
