Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 459

PETER LAUREMBERG (1585-1639) Anonymi Introductio anatomica. Apud Philippum Bonk 1744 xvi, 157 [31] pp., 3 fold. plates. 20.1 cm.

This introductory work to the study of anatomy is of unknown authorship but has been attributed to the editor of the 1618 edition, Peter Lauremberg. The text, printed with Greek and Latin on opposite pages, borrows freely from ancient authors, particularly Aristotle. The work has been heavily annotated by Daniel Wilhelm Triller and Johann Stephan Bernard (1718-1793). The two full-page engravings of male figures and the folding plate of a head were taken from a Leiden manuscript of indefinite date and are merely linear drawings with rather poor proportions.

Cited references: Osler 3057 (1618 ed.); Waller 432; Wellcome III, p. 456
