[Author’s name spelled variously as: Paaw, Pauw, Pavius.] First edition of Paaw’s practical commentary and expansion of Hippocrates’ treatise on head wounds. Paaw takes the famous work of 400 B.C. point-by-point, offering instructions and illustrations of practical value, providing the ideal succenturiatus or substitute for the medical student without a willing volunteer to practice on. The engravings depict examples of wounds made from spears and swords; the sutures that connect parts of the skull; the inside and base of the skull; the muscles of the face; and a cross-section of an opened skull depicting the brain and spinal cord, amongst numerous others. The tools of the trade are also depicted here: instruments used in the trepanning (making other holes in the skull), the scalpels and tweezers used during invasive surgery.
