Galen's work on hygiene, De sanitate tuenda, has here been translated into Italian by Giovanni Tarcagnota (d. 1566). Galen did not write this book for the common man but addressed it to a small, cultured upper-class who had the time and means to follow his recommendations and regimen. It provides an interesting insight into how much more highly developed and sophisticated personal hygiene had become since the time of Hippocrates.
