In the Renaissance there was a growth of interest in diseases of women and encyclopedic works on the subject were issued by Caspar Wolf (see No. 364) and Caspar Bauhin (see No. 392). They constituted compilations of the best that had been written up to their time. Spach, a Strasbourg physician, reprinted most of Wolf's and Bauhin's compilations and added several other treatises. Included in this huge collection are works by Platter, Moschion, Le Boë, Montanus, Paré, and many others. The work is profusely illustrated with woodcuts of anatomical subjects (some taken from Vesalius), as well as of various instruments for medical and surgical treatment.
