The first Dutch translation of a pivotal French work on ophthalmology, drawing on many Greek and Arabic sources. First published in French, in 1585, as Traité des maladies de l’oeil, it is considered by Garrison and Morton to be the best of Renaissance books on ophthalmology and an epitome of existing knowledge on the subject. Jacques Guillemeau from Orleans (1550-1612), was a pupil of Ambroise Paré, to whom the book is dedicated. Paré, in his turn, contributed a laudatory poem to the work. The present Dutch edition was translated by Carolus Battus (author of an early cookbook), and augmented with a new dedication by the publisher to the Dordrecht physician Maximiliaen Bouman. The book includes several fine historiated woodcut initials.
