Castelli was professor of theology, philosophy, and medicine at Messina. He first published his lexicon in 1598 at Messina and it gained wide popularity, being published in many editions through the end of the eighteenth century. Since the dictionary was so widely used, many different individuals became involved in editing or revising it. This third edition has been edited by the physician Adrian Ravenstein (fl. 1651-1685).
