Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 376

CHRISTOVAM DA COSTA (ca. 1540-1599) Aromatum & medicamentorum in Orientali India nascentium liber. Ex officina Plantiniana, apud viduam, & Joannem Moretum 1593 2nd ed. [225]-312 pp., illus. 16.1 cm.

Costa was born on the island of Mozambique and practiced as a surgeon at Burgos in northern Spain. He was an active traveler and spent some years in India, chiefly at Goa, where he made the acquaintance of Garcia de Orta (see No. 245). Costa first published this work in Spanish at Burgos in 1578. Although it contained Costa's commentary, it was largely an illustrated translation of Orta's Colóquios dos simples, e drogas e cousas medicinais da India. It was later translated into French, Italian, and Latin and became well known throughout Europe. The present work is the second Latin edition and is here translated by the noted botanist, Charles de l'Écluse.
