Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 373.5

JEAN RIOLAN (1538-1605) Ioannis Riolani Ambiani, medici apud Parisienses clarissimi, Chirurgia. Impensis Henrici Osthausii bibliopolae 1601 First edition. [6], 175, [3] p. (the last leaf blank). 16 cm.

The elder Riolan’s last work edited by Johann von Jessen. Riolan came from Amiens and was a leading member of the Paris Medical Faculty, serving as dean 1585-6. He was a disciple of Fernel and published commentaries on a number of works. His wife was a Pietre, a member of the prominent Parisian medical family: no wonder that their son, also Jean, was, though Harvey’s most important opponent, a brilliant physiologist.
