Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 343

PIETRO PAOLO MAGNI (b. 1525) Discorso . . . sopra il modo di fare i cauterij ó rottorij á corpi humani. Apresso Bartolomeo Bonfadino 1588 [15] 86 (misnumbered 82) [1] pp., illus., port. 21.8 cm.

It is doubtful that Magni did much to advance the art of surgery, but this work, depicting the cruel use of cautery in the treatment of wounds, gives an excellent view of common surgical practices of his era. Evidently the lessons of Pare* had not yet reached this author. Numerous woodcuts in the text illustrate cautery irons, surgical instruments, and bandages.
