FRANCISCO DE VALLES (1524-1592) Controversiarum medicarum et philosophicarum. Apud heredes Andreae Wecheli, Claudium Marnium & Joann. Aubrium 1590 [8] 452 [10] pp. 32.8 cm.
Valles, a native of Covarrubias, Spain, studied medicine at Alcalá de Henares and eventually became a professor on the faculty. He also served as chief physician in the court of the Spanish monarch, King Philip II. This third edition of his text on general medicine covers a variety of subjects and relies heavily upon references and quotations from Galen, Aristotle, Hippocrates, Avicenna, and other early medical authorities. Works such as this continued the long dependence on Galen and his predecessors and contained little original thought or new knowledge.
