The present volume contains the first complete collected edition of Foreest's Observationes et curationes series. Volume I contains the first 28 books; Volume II, issued in 1604, contains Book 29--De arthritide & aliis affectibus partium externarum; and, Volume III contains Books 30-32--De venenis, fucis & lue venerea. Volume I covers a wide range of medical topics. The first 7 books are devoted to various types of fevers. Other books in the volume are devoted to diseases of the head, chest, cardiovascular system, abdominal viscera, and male and female reproductive systems. Each topic is treated by the use of case histories with copious references to both ancient and contemporary authors. The rare consilium from Vesalius to Foreest is contained in Book 10. The logical arrangement of the material, Foreest's consistent plan of discussion for each disease, and the large author and subject index made this a highly authoritative work. Often cited by later writers, the work is an overall summary of sixteenth century medical knowledge and practice.
