For more information on this author or work, see number: 238
As a practicing physician, Mattioli was naturally interested in the use of medicines and their production. In the present work he discusses methods for the distillation of juices from plants and includes woodcuts of six stills that may be used for that purpose. There is a list of plants arranged under their curative properties according to the humoral system of qualities, and another listing of diseases and bodily complaints with the plants recommended for their cure. In many instances recipes are included and Mattioli notes in the dedicatory epistle that he has extracted some of his material from his commentary on Dioscorides (see No. 238).
