Mattioli's commentary on Dioscorides went through numerous Italian, Latin, French, German, and Czech editions. The first German edition was published in 1562 and the work continued to be published well into the eighteenth century. Joachim Camerarius (1534-1598), physician and botanist of Nuremberg, is best known for his Hortus medicus et philosophicus (Frankfurt am Main, 1588). He first translated and edited Mattioli's Commentarii in the 1580s.
