-1918 A war nurse's diary; Sketches from a Belgian field hospital. Macmillan 1918 [10] 115 [7] pp., [16] plates (front.). 18.7 cm.
This is an intimate, almost day-to-day account of the experiences of a British nurse serving with fellow medical personnel in a Belgian Field Hospital during World War I. From her departure, a few days after the war began, until her return in October 1915, she experiences inadequate shelter and supplies, shortages and substitutions, the agony of the wounded, and grief for men who died too young. She relives the amusing and irritating moments of medical life near the front lines and recalls her contact with a number of famous people (Marie Curie set up the X-ray equipment). Of special interest are the many photographs of hospital settings and personnel. The author's name is not revealed.
