The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 2337

RICHARD STEPHEN CREED (1898-1964) Reflex activity of the spinal cord. Clarendon Press 1932 vi [2] 183 pp., [9] plates, illus. 21.6 cm.

This work, by five eminent British neurological researchers, presents the physiological basis of reflex activity of the spinal cord in mammals, especially as shown by the response in skeletal muscles. The book updates the work first begun by the discoveries of Bell and Magendie on the anatomy and physiology of the spinal nerve roots. Reflex responses are here studied only as high as the lower brain stem. The authors have added an extensive bibliography, chiefly of English sources, for the convenience of students. Former owners of the book include Margaret A. Kennard, an important American research neurologist, and Arthur Ward, chief of neurosurgery at Washington University Medical School.
