ARTHUR HALE CURTIS (1881-1955) Obstetrics and gynecology. W. B. Saunders 1933 Vol. I: xii, 1165 pp., illus. (part col.), diagrs.; Vol. II: xi [1] 1135 pp., illus. (part col.), diagrs.; Vol. III: xii, 1201 pp., illus. (part col.), diagrs.; Vol. IV (Index): 137 pp. 24 cm.

Curtis, a graduate of Rush Medical College in Chicago, Illinois, was professor and chairman of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University Medical School for many years. He served as editor of this comprehensive multi-authored set that covers all aspects of American obstetrics and gynecology. He also contributed six chapters on such subjects as childbirth injuries, venereal infections, operative management, and postoperative care. Eighty noted American and Canadian authorities in the fields of obstetrics, gynecology, anatomy, surgery, embryology, pediatrics, and radiology prepared one or more chapters on their areas of expertise for this state-of-the-art treatise. The three volumes are profusely illustrated with drawings, photographs, and colored plates designed to enhance the accompanying text. The first chapter of Volume I contains detailed drawings of the female pelvis made by W. Banks Stewart (fl. 1900) from dissections prepared by John Martin (see Foreword). Of special interest are the long section on the history of midwifery by Irving S. Cutter (1875-1945) and the brief outline of the history of American gynecology by Howard A. Kelly (see No. 2218 ff.).
