Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 2316

MARIE CHARLOTTE CARMICHAEL STOPES (1880-1958) Contraception (birth control) its theory, history and practice. John Bale, Sons & Danielsson 1923 xiii, 418 pp., 4 plates. 21.4 cm.

Stopes was an early advocate of birth control and was a controversial figure who was both abused and praised for her courageous views. In this book, which may be considered to be one of the first factual and unemotional discussions of the subject, Stopes discusses the various aspects of the problem of birth control and provides a comprehensive discussion of the arguments for and against contraceptives as well as instructions for their use. She has also given an excellent review of the history of contraception with particular emphasis on the nineteenth century, when there was increasing interest in the subject in both public and scientific circles.
