Losch, a Swiss botanist and pharmacologist, studied and collected specimens for this herbal in his native country. The book contains a detailed classification of the principal medicinal herbs according to family, and a discussion of their conditions of growth, appearance, and medical applications. There are eighty-six beautiful colored plates depicting the leaves and main stalk of each plant, its roots, blossoms, seeds, and variations of anatomical characteristics within its family.
