HIDEYO NOGUCHI (1876-1928) Serum diagnosis of syphilis and the butyric acid test for syphilis. J. B. Lippincott 1910 vii [1] 173 pp., illus. (part col.), tables, col. plates. 21.9 cm.
Noguchi, a Japanese physician, studied medicine at Tokyo and worked at the Institute for Infectious Diseases in Tokyo until 1900 when he came to Philadelphia. He worked with Simon Flexner (1836-1946) in pathology at the University of Pennsylvania until 1904 when he joined the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in New York. He remained at the Institute until his death from yellow fever while in Africa studying that very disease. Noguchi was the first to show that the brain tissue of paretics contained Spirochaete pallida and that syphilis could be transmitted from that tissue to experimental animals. In addition to his important work with snake venoms, he also cultivated several types of spirochetes and developed a bacteria-free vaccine virus in rabbit tissues. In the Preface to this book, Noguchi states that his objectives were "first to give a brief yet adequate account of the principles of serum haemolysis . . . and, secondly, to give in detail the technic of Wassermann's method and of the method recommended by the author."
