The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 2291

ANDREW BALFOUR (1873-1931) Report of the Wellcome Tropical Research Laboratories at the Gordon Memorial College, Khartoum. Published for the Department of Education, Sudan Government, by Baillière, Tindall & Cox, London 1904-1911 1st-4th. Illus., plates (part col.), maps, diagrs. 27.4 cm.

These reports on tropical medicine, hygiene, and tropical veterinary science were edited by Balfour, who was director of the Wellcome Tropical Research Laboratories at Gordon Memorial College in Khartoum from 1902 to 1913. A Scottish physician, Balfour was an expert in tropical medicine and public health, and it was largely due to his efforts that Khartoum became a modern and sanitary city. He worked hard to improve the health of native communities in the Sudan and made a number of important discoveries in protozoology while he was in Africa. Many of his findings are included in these interesting and wide-ranging reports.

Gift of John Martin, M.D.
