CHARLES ALBERT ELSBERG (1871-1948) Surgical diseases of the spinal cord, membranes, and nerve roots; symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. P. B. Hoeber 1941 [1st ed.]. viii, 598 pp., illus., diagrs. 25.3 cm.
Elsberg began his career as a general surgeon and grew into neurosurgery as his career progressed. He received his medical degree at Columbia University, studied for a time in Europe, and on his return was appointed assistant pathologist at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. In 1909 he became neurosurgeon of the Neurological Institute of New York, which he helped found; this association continued until his retirement in 1937. From his first book in 1916, Diseases of the spinal cord, until his death, Elsberg's authority in neurology was greatly respected both here and abroad. This book was widely used as a standard textbook in many medical schools. It contains clear discussions of anatomy, pathology, clinical signs, and diagnostic and surgical procedures.
