Together with Rosenblueth, then assistant professor of physiology at Harvard, Cannon prepared this work "to render an organized account of recently acquired evidence regarding the chemical step which intervenes between the nerve impulse and the effector in the functioning of the autonomic nervous system" (Preface, p. vii). Cannon's coauthor, Rosenblueth, was a Mexican physiologist who studied medicine at Paris and, after leaving Harvard in 1944, continued his research in the physiology of the central nervous system and the heart at several institutions in Mexico City.
