Although Cannon's scientific discoveries are highly significant, he also made equally important contributions to the philosophy of science and physiology. His several books and articles on the body's physiological organization have had a lasting influence on the thinking of scientists and physiologists. This was one of the most important of those works for in it he summarizes his ideas and investigations on homeostasis--a word he coined to define the condition of physiological equilibrium during periods of both stress and normal activity. The work was first published in 1932 and this second edition was prompted both by Cannon's desire to incorporate new research findings and a request to translate the book into French.
