When World War I began, Cannon joined the Harvard Hospital Unit for service in France. At that time, shock from war or industrial wounds and injuries was not well understood and Cannon immediately began to study the condition. The results of his investigations, carried on both during and following the war, are summarized in the present book. Cannon eventually ascribed the condition to a combination of acidosis and a reduction of blood volume. His recommended treatment was an intravenous injection of warm alkaline solution.
