Klebs was born at Bern, Switzerland and pursued his medical studies at five major European universities before graduating from Basel. He received postgraduate medical training in physiology, gynecology, and ophthalmology before becoming medical director of a tuberculosis sanatorium in Alabama. Klebs also directed a tuberculosis institute in Chicago and became a noted medical historian and leading authority on medical incunabula. In this comprehensive work on tuberculosis, Klebs invited experts on the etiology, pathology, epidemiology, diagnosis, prognosis, prevention, and treatment of tuberculosis to prepare a chapter on their area of expertise. The text is preceded by an introduction by Sir William Osler on the history of tuberculosis and also includes an extensive bibliography.
