A native of Berlin, Pappenheim initially studied mathematics and philosophy at the University, but he changed to medicine and was graduated with a medical degree in 1895. He was particularly interested in hematology and worked with several leading hematologists in Königsberg, Hamburg, and Berlin. He was a prolific author and wrote several books as well as a number of papers. Pappenheim was one of the major figures in the early days of hematology and was the founder of Folia haematologica. This book on the diagnosis and detection of blood diseases was edited by Hans Hirschfeld (1873-1929) several years after Pappenheim's death.
