EDWARD FLATAU (1869-1932) Atlas des menschlichen Gehirns und des Faserverlaufes. S. Karger 1894 27 [16] pp., [9] plates (1 col. fold.). 32.6 cm.
Flatau studied medicine at Moscow and spent six years in Berlin with Leyden, Goldscheider, Mendel, and Oppenheim before completing his degree at Moscow in 1898. He returned to Warsaw where he became a leader in developing Polish neurology. Among his many research interests were the pyramidal tracts of the brain and spinal cord, tumors of the spinal cord, multiple sclerosis, and cerebrospinal meningitis. Flatau's law recognizes that in the long fiber tracts of the spinal cord, the longest neurofibrils arrange themselves toward the periphery. This atlas of the brain and spinal cord, with its highly accurate and artistic plates, was so successful that it was quickly translated into English, French, and Polish.
