Braun studied medicine in Vienna where he graduated in 1891. He did postgraduate work at Vienna's General Hospital where he qualified for internal medicine in 1900 and as lecturer in 1910. Braun remained at the General hospital his entire career specializing in cardiology and was especially interested in the physiopathology of the cardiovascular system. Nearly all of his books and other writings dealt with cardiology, and the present work is his first contribution to the literature. A detailed study of the heart's motion, it is the "first employment of cinematography to record the cardiac changes during all phases of heart of heart contraction" (Garrison-Morton 838).
