Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 2259

SERGE VORONOFF (1866-1951) Étude sur la vieillesse et la rajeunissement par la greffe. G. Doin 1926 213 pp., plates, ports. 23.2 cm.

Voronoff, a skilled and well-educated French surgeon, was director of the Laboratoire de Chirurgie Expérimentale at the Collège de France, where he experimented with the transplantation of various organs of the endocrine system. The clinical results of his testicular grafting for sexual rejuvenation caused a sensation in the early twentieth century, but soon faded because it was not successful in restoring sexual vigor. For substantial fees, he would transplant monkey testicles, the gonads of a young ape, or human glands. It is interesting to note that he died from syphilis contracted from one of his own monkey transplants. This book was his major work and has his signature on the flyleaf.

Gift of John Martin, M.D.
