Williams, a native of Baltimore and a graduate of the University of Maryland, was one of the leading teachers at Johns Hopkins Medical School at the turn of the century. He was dean of the medical school from 1911 until 1923 and served many years as professor of obstetrics. Williams made important studies on the pathology of the reproductive organs, the physiology of pregnancy, and the etiology of eclampsia. His Obstetrics was the most popular and widely-used textbook in its field and went through seven editions before his death. Updated versions of his work are still used in many medical schools.
