Crile prepared this work on the surgical treatment of essential hypertension in order to summarize the developments that had taken place in this new method of treating high blood pressure. He commented that "It is not a formal treatise on the subject of hypertension, but it presents rather the conception of the genesis of essential hypertension in accordance with which a plan of operative treatment has been formulated; it describes the surgical procedures which we have employed; it gives the results of these procedures and reviews what others have done in the field of the surgical treatment of essential hypertension" (Preface).
