Crile served as a senior consultant in surgical research during World War I and was in France during 1917-1918, where he was able to continue his studies of shock. In the present work he summarizes his research and experimentation on shock and exhaustion and relates them to the kinetic theory. The book was edited by Amy Farley Rowland (b. 1872).
