After the publication if his first atlas, Joseph wanted to publish a second using colored plates to illustrate the characteristic of cutaneous diseases rather than photographs. Upon meeting JB van Deventer, Joseph found him to be an exceptional artist and van Deventer’s plates are those which accompany Joseph’s text.
